Frequently asked questions.
What should I wear?
For Rehab Treatments and Sports Massage
When deciding what to wear to a sports massage, first consider the following factors:
What kind of sports massage are you having? Pre-event, post-event, maintenance, recovery etc.
Which part(s) of the body will be targeted during the massage? You’ll need to provide suitable access to this area.
If you’re unsure ask for advice prior to your session.
Bottoms
It’s best to wear loose-fitting shorts (or you can bring a pair to change into) if your rehab/sports massage is to be performed on the lower parts of your body. Depending on the condition being treated, your massage therapist will need to be able to freely work on the muscles in your glutes, and/or legs, and tight-fitting clothing will restrict how well they can work.
Avoid:
Jeans
Regular smart/workwear trousers/chinos/slacks
Tops
Similarly, it’s best to wear loose-fitting tops to a sports massage. Many sports massage therapists will often treat men for upper body conditions without a top on at all, but this is more of an issue for women. Some women feel comfortable draping a towel across their chest, whilst others prefer to wear a sports bra or just a loose-fitting top.
Avoid:
Tight-fitting tops
Shirts
Jumpers/sweatshirts/hoodies
Underwear
Sports massage therapists prefer you to wear loose-fitting clothing, which also extends to underwear, where possible. Unless women choose to wear a sports bra, as mentioned above, all other undergarments should be loose-fitting, where possible.
Swedish/General Relaxation Massage
Your choices are:
1: Stay Fully Clothed
You want to get a massage, but you’re anxious about undressing. The idea of taking your clothes off seems like the exact opposite of relaxing to you.
If this is the case, feel free to stay fully clothed, it’s totally fine.
However, this can affect the quality of your massage, especially depending on the type you are receiving. Being fully clothed can make it more difficult to work on areas of the body like your back and shoulders, and can limit or prevent the use of lotions and oils.
It’s understandable if you’re anxious about undressing for your massage. At Eryri Massage Therapies I make your comfort a priority and always protect your modesty.
During your massage, I will ensure your body is covered with a towel or sheet at all times and only areas that are currently being massaged will be exposed.
If you still feel uncomfortable with the idea of dressing down to any level, you are welcome to keep your clothes on during a massage.
2: Get Partially Bare
If you are uncomfortable with fully undressing but willing to shed some clothing, you can opt to leave your undergarments on.
However, keep in mind that bras can make it difficult to work on the back and shoulder areas, but this is something we can work around for your comfort.
3: Take It All Off
As long as you are comfortable enough to enjoy your massage worry-free, removing all of your clothing can provide the best massage experience and allow your massage therapist to fully address and massage the muscles and tissues in your body.
I am trained to use the towels or sheets to drape your body and only uncover the area that will be worked on. Your modesty will always be taken into account!
